Mmmh, root vegetables. It's snowing today, and I had to go to a funeral (a friend's mom, so... a step removed from being painful to me, and just sympathetic pain, if that makes any sense), and I got rejected from Michigan State, so I was going to make soup and buy delicious bread. I figure soup is both a comfort food and a winter food, and it is decidedly a day for both of things. So I went to Whole Foods, since it's the only store on the way home, and if I'm only getting one or two things, I don't mind the expense. And I was going to make chicken noodle from scratch, but I needed carrots and celery. So I got some carrots. But I don't actually like celery, and I have yet to figure out why it goes in so many things. So then I was going to make a creamy chicken soup, so I got some cream. And then I was trying to leave, when I saw a perfectly sized package of beef for stew. So I figured I would save the cream for something else (like dessert!!), and use the carrots and the beef to make stew. So I ran back and got parsnips, since I like them better than potatoes anyway.

My beef is browned, my carrots, parsnips, onions, and garlic are cooking on the stove and smelling wonderful, and soon I will add wine and beef broth, and my whole house will smell delicious for two hours while it cooks. I have breadsticks from the awesome bakery, and they will be buttery and soft as always, and I am going to drink some wine and practice my presentation, since I give the physics colloquium this week, since I'm a real researcher and all. I also turned in the next draft of my paper to John just as he was leaving, and I am safe and warm inside while the snow comes down, down, down outside.

I still need a cooking icon.

you should get a cooking icon! I love reading about all the wonderful things you cook; sometimes I even second-guess my usual dislike of anything that happens in a kitchen :)

oh and hey, when is the colloquium this week? I'd like to come, if I can!

The colloquium is at 3:30 on Friday, and you should totally come. We apparently only have 7 physics seniors this year, so I'm pretty sure the room will be empty. Unless John convinces his classes to come. He seems to be the only person who cares enough to mention it to his classes. Plus it actually is astronomy.

And yay! I'm glad you enjoy my cooking posts. I enjoy cooking and writing about cooking. Usually I enjoy cooking even more than I enjoy eating, which can be a problem, but the beef stew turned out awesome, so I ate a lot of it tonight.
