Oh, God. It never bothered me in HP fandom, because none of them hang out in the real world very much. As long as you used jumpers and some British insults, it was pretty easy to write about Remus and Sirius and the gang.
Unfortunately, Sherlock and John very much inhabit the real world, which is terrifying. I keep finding myself google mapping locations throughout London, and trying to ask the internet what the Brits would call a drugstore, whether the buses take cash or tokens of some sort and where they go (thank God for transit websites!), what John would get paid by the military and who he would talk to about it - I don't know these things! It is literally foreign to me!
I mean, I can just write whatever and be wrong, but there's this nagging part of me that says, "They live in the real world! You can't make up places and routes and British customs!" I need to go find a comm and have someone brit pick my writing. Also, I guess betas are useful for other things as well. And, I mean, I could get more than three paragraphs in, but it's the set-up that's hard. After that, they're gonna all... talk about their feelings or some shit. Or solve some crime. Or possibly cause Lestrade to resign. Or maybe just send each other ridiculous texts. Who knows?!
