I've been here.
Apr. 2nd, 2011 08:09 pmIt's a good thing I've been blasting my way through Veronica Mars, because real life is stressing me the fuck out. I mean, no one ever said a grad student salary would be glamorous, but I'm sick of departments not calculating for basic cost of living and realizing that they're supposed to supply that. I always feel a little bad whining about all of this. I know people in other programs never get paid, and just assume they'll take out further loans for grad school. But that's not how physics programs are supposed to work.
I should hear about the fellowship in a month or so though, if not sooner. So at least I'll have answers soon. And I signed the release form today with my roommates, so our contractual obligation to each other is done, as of May 31st. The plan for now is to drag my stuff up to my parents' for the summer, since my job at school (assuming it really does come through) is only two days a week, and then move in with my awesome friend at the end of the summer. Neither of us know about funding for next year, but so far we're both just assuming it'll work out, one way or the other.
On the other hand, I got to go see some fun music at an awesome mansion on Friday night, and I'm probably going to see a college production of Rent on Sunday. Plus, I'm halfway through season two of Veronica Mars. Man. Why don't good shows have more seasons? The West Wing was the only show I got to watch through that was as long as it should have been. Most of the shows I love only have one or two.
( Speaking of Veronica Mars... I hate that just discussing which characters are good or bad guys is a huge spoiler for the first season. )
In the non-spoilery complaint department, it bugs me how little this show actually deals with people being in high school. Most of the guys running around have absent or non-existent parents, everyone's drinking and having sex like it's no big thing, and I'm just like... I know my high school experience was sheltered, and I didn't do anything wild. But I think even for normal kids, high school is supposed to be where you try stuff out and freak out and mess up and it should be a big deal (speaking of which, how does Weevil lead a biker gang at his age? I guess it's totally plausible that he's been held back, but even so, how long has he had a license for?). Even Buffy, which was way less realistic in almost every sense, at least made a little more sense in that department, even if the Bronze was improbable, to say the least. I thought the first season of VM at least tried to be more realistic about that stuff.
Which reminds me to mention, this show has some fantastic meta moments. I mean first, there's the Joss Whedon and Kevin Smith cameos, but watching Alyson Hannigan and Charisma Carpenter bitch at each other was just amazing. I was halfway through the scene before I put it together, and then I had to backtrack just to soak up the nostalgia. Charisma's character in general just feels like Cordy without the intervention in her life from the Scoobies and Angel. Cordelia Chase: the original 09er. I also keep thinking how she and Aly Hannigan don't seem to have aged, and then I remember that this aired in 2005, so... no, they really hadn't.
